Christoffer Connée - BIG HEART #1

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

I am a social person whom always tries to learn by doing and catch the moment.
I wanted to use an unexplored area for advertising and convert companies marketing budgets to CSR or charity money. The first idea was to use the area when you make a phone call and waiting for the other person to pick up. Instead of the dial tone, there is a room for, example some kind of marketing. This idea developed to the unused locked background screen at your smartphone.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I grew up dreaming of becoming a professional tennis player and worked hard for it, witch gave me the opportunities to travel around Europe to play against the top players of my age. The coolest thing I done was to study three months in Argentina at Universidad de Buenos Aries. In South America I saw poverty and awful environmental treatment in ways I had not seen in Sweden witch boosted my interest of contributing. I am currently studying my bachelor in economics in my hometown of Lund.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

The pilot test for the app in Lund is coming to an end and the time for the national expansion has come. The team and me have to add many more companies so that the ads selection becomes as great as possible for the user experience. I will spend a lot of time talking to national companies and smaller local ones. As well as communicating with the organisations the charity money goes to, to find ways they can help us too.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

For BIG HEART, I hope that we can establish the company further, so we can grow the user number naturally. On a personal level I want to gather information, knowledge and experience in the business culture. I believe that I can make many new friends and contacts for the future, also I would like to understand and learn how operate a start up.

Finally, like Leapfrog I want to be useful and help.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

With the help I´ve received I have been able to put time aside to launch our first real sales campaign. The campaign has consisted of selling advertisement spots in our platform to both local and national companies. Meanwhile we have continued developing the beta version of the application for Android and can now fully provide a platform were companies can interact with potential customers whilst donating money to charity.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

By timing our first sales campaign in the middle of summer holidays (June-August) most decision makers surrounding advertisement have been harder to reach which has slowed down our sales numbers. On the other hand are most companies surprisingly positive about our product and the way our business works and sales budgets have been smashed. We get a lot of help and attention from the business community because of our charity angel.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

As the advertisement spots are getting filled we are going to focus on the user recruitment. There are many different strategies to reach new users. Through our partnerships with charity organisations and their channels. We will also recruit users face to face at big events such as Båstad Swedish open this weekend and the Way out west city festival, as well as daily guerilla marketing.

How did you experience the three months?

I had a wonderful time this summer working together with Leapfrog. I didn’t know what to expect at the beginning, but this summer has inspired me to keep on working with this project and also future ideas.

My social skills has improved significantly during my stay at a your very modern office at “World trade center” here in Lund. Here I shared thoughts and ideas with people who are managing all different types of start-ups. I definitely feel that I took the opportunity to learn and excel from them.

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

What I’ve found the most struggling working with my project these past months is how most Swedish businesses shut down their operations during the summer, of course that could be seen as a positive thing considering people are on vacation and thus out and about. This, however, made it harder for me to get in contact with various companies to develop cooperating partnerships.

The most enjoyable outcome has been meeting all the new people and contacts during our workshops as well as in the streets of Lund.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

I believe Big Heart has the ability to grow a lot, especially now that the IPhone version is being released. In the near future we will work hard to expand and market our selves in other strategic cities, like for example student cities. In the long rung anything could happen really, my hunch is that the platform’s users will increase organically, just like the company, and for us to expand our partnerships with companies to neighbouring countries.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

The importance of presenting our idea on a short limit of time. All the training on both short and long pitches has been very valuable for me.

It takes time to grow as a company. My eager mind often speculates about the future instead of focusing on what is happening now and this I have learned to work with during my summer. In order to climb a mountain, you have to take one step at a time.

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

In our global society networking is more and more essential for success. Try to expand your network by talking and sharing tips with other entrepreneurs. Get the help you need and learn from it every day, we always say that we learn by doing. Sometimes it works and sometimes you have to think outside the box to fix the problem.
If you don’t believe in your idea then who will?
