Mathias Berg - Innovational Movement #1

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

My name is Mathias, and my company sets out to solve the problem with transporting and moving patients in hospitals. The Solution is a new type of hospital bed, that enables staff to move patients without any physical effort. The idea for the project came up during a class I took a year ago, and after the course was finished me and four of my friends filed a patent application and started our company.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I am a student at the faculty of engineering, just finished my fourth year as a mechanical engineer with a master in industrial management and logistics. Last fall I studied abroad at North Carolina State University in the US. While there, I took a class in entrepreneurship that gave me a lot of valuable insights of how to become a better entrepreneur, which I think will help me a lot this summer.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

This summer I will focus mainly on two things. First of all, we are developing a prototype for the bed, and as of now we are running out of money so I will work on getting more funding and help out as much as I can constructing the prototype. Secondly, I will create on a full market analysis and try to schedule meetings with potential customers for the fall, when the prototype is ready.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

I expect to achieve and be done with the market analysis and hopefully the prototype will be finished by the end of the summer.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

So far, we have done several things:

We have reached out to different hospitals/nursing homes and had interviews with some personnel to collect information regarding our market. We have had visited a hospital and seen the environment and how the nurses work, and had more interviews.

We have also established a market view in order to collect money to the PCT application – which we now have started with – we have a meeting with a patent attorney next week.

Furthermore, we have built a simple prototype that we next week will upgrade.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

So far, so good. The prototype took a little while longer than expected to build, but the first version is now completed and gave us answers to some of the answers we wanted it to do.

The market research we needed to establish in order to get money for the international patent application got approved, which meant that we got funding for the application, and we are really happy about that!

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

We have started reaching out to future potential customers, med-tech firms that have shown interest to our product over the phone. The plan now is to schedule meetings with them after the summer holidays, in the middle of August. So before that, we need to finalize a good pitch and finish up all the material we need for the meetings, such as a better looking prototype and maybe even improve the already existing animations.
