Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

The human machine interface is something that interest me a lot. And our idea is to give blind people a better tool to navigate through an everyday environment. Depth information translates to tactile.

We got this idea when thinking about what Tetra Society does, combined with remembering watching a program about how a blind person sees his surroundings by making clicking sounds; just like a bat.

 

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

Curiosity in science and people. Spontaneity. Creativity put to action. A belief in change. Being like this with people with a similar mind set is an important part of my life.

I’m studying my second year of nanoscience, but also have some background in medical school. I’ve been truly active in the student life earlier with hosting events, all from snowboard competition to carnival. I’m also working for an electrical car start up called Uniti.

 

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

Half of the time I’ll spend in Toronto and meet up with the rest of the team, which are also students. The rest of time I’ll continue the iteration here in Lund.

We’ll make a deeper research in what is needed for the user, how this is best achieved and do it.

I’ll also get in connection and work closely with other start-ups in Toronto who’s working for projects about developing aid for disabled people.

                 

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

Mainly to complete a first prototype; both hard- and software. Get a better insight in the implementation; what works and what doesn’t. But also to get more understanding in utilities for disabled people in general.

We’re planning to also start applying for some funding for further development.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time. 

Different approaches of using the technology has been examined. Exploration of existing options and related projects with similar goals to understand what can be learned from them.

Mostly prototyping for proof of concept have been done. Both how most accurate tactile feedback from vibrators to skin is implemented and also how to make a 3D picture with IR. A functional prototype using Kinect motion sensor has been made and tested which showed good results.

Interview with a visually disabled person about everyday life limitations to estimate when the product would be especially needed.

 

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected? 

Essentially it has. The hardware setup was rather straight forward; only the discrimination of different vibrators feedback was more problematic, but was solved with the right choice of attaching material. It has been more work software wise to remove background noise in picture. Less price limitation of choice of hardware could have saved some labour and constructing.

To find time for collaboration and keep everyone active the same time has been tricky since many can only work on this part time. And because of vacation and summer; less access to working spaces like workshops.

 

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way? 

Develop a more sophisticated prototype. One that works in outdoor lighting, has a greater field of haptic feedback with more vibrators, and is more portable and even wearable.

Making more tests in different environments where it will be used, with several test subjects. Make an evaluation form which these individuals can give response on.

Create more pitches and graphics to show the idea and the usage of it, for future fundraising and obtaining venture capital.
