Mattias Willemsen - CreativeVR #1

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

The concept of virtual worlds has always been very intriguing to me, so naturally I have grown a huge interest in virtual reality over the past years. While I see endless potential for VR, I often meet the belief that VR will cause people to isolate themselves from the rest of the world. With CreativeVR I want to challenge that belief by creating experiences that rely on cooperation and social aspects as core features.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I am a student in game and software engineering at BTH. I have previously worked with mobile app development and before that tourist guiding. No matter if it's a tour, an app or a game, I love to create experiences that people want to share with each other. I have worked a lot with group projects and have a huge interest in making groups cooperate and enjoy their work while working towards a shared goal.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

I will spend these three months focusing on both building the foundation for my company and developing my first product. I will work on establishing some recognition on social media and forums from the very start to allow for community involvement in the development further down the line.

I will develop some small proof of concepts, gather feedback, and then develop an early version of a co-op game for the GearVR.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

By the end of the summer I expect to have the foundations of my company worked out. I should have established myself on social media, found some followers and developed a product that is relevant and has potential on the market. Additionally, I expect to learn a lot of things about developing for the real world and mass market.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

During the first half of the leapfrogs time I have done research and gathered data about what kind of VR games users are interested in through a survey. With the survey results in mind, I have built two small prototype games to be tested and compared. I have compiled the feedback from testers and will spend the second half of the leapfrogs time to develop a game based on the feedback from the prototypes.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

I realised as soon as I started gathering data from users that the market might not want the game that I originally intended to develop. I have had to change a lot of the aspects based on the feedback I got and will move on with much more focus on constant feedback from potential users to develop a game that the market actually wants. I have, through the leapfrogs workshops, gotten a clearer picture of the strong points in my idea and will also put more focus on those

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

I will be spending most of the remaining time on pure game development with frequent test sessions for feedback. I will follow my original plan in the sense that these weeks were planned to be mostly game development, but the actual thing that I will develop has changed a lot from what I initially had planned.
