Divya Mohan - the edibles
Divya Mohan - the edibles #1
Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?
I am a person who loves to learn. Everything interests me. I am driven mainly by food and innovation. I enjoy research and the thrill of uncertainty it brings. It is what keeps me excited and going. The inspiration for the edibles came from the extreme shock I was in when I found out that straws are the seventh biggest pollutant of our oceans. A small entity with such a big impact!
Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.
I am a currently a food innovation and product design masters student. I work in the field of innovative food product development. I did my bachelors in biotechnology engineering. I have previously worked with developing inexpensive bio-fertiliser for the Indian farming market. I am also a theatre artist and have conducted several theatre based softskill development workshops.
What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?
I want to explore the user scenario for edibles straws for which I will have a survey conducted. I will conduct prototype development trials in order to make the minimum viable product for further consumer usability and acceptability tests. I will be working in a lab to design the experiments and run the trials for prototype development. I will also have meeting with my potential customers to network and receive feedback for the development.
What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?
In the three months my aim is to build a customer base and understand the needs of the market place for edible straws. I expect to have completed atleast 5 different trials on prototype development and have communicated with 5 different customers. I want to have a minimum viable product to show potential customers.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.
I have registered myself to a coworking laboratory space. I am working on the background research for different ingredient mixes to develop the straws in order to develop prototypes. I have contacted suppliers for to acquire some of those ingredients.
Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?
Finding suppliers for certain ingredients has been difficult and the time to deliver some of the ingredients is quite long. Apart from this the plan is going as scheduled.
What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?
Based on my background research I will use the difference ingredient mixes to make several prototypes of the straws and test their physical properties.

How did you experience the three months?
It was extremely informative and productive. I got to explore a lot of different prototypes that I wanted to try.
What has been hardest/most enjoyable?
It has been hard to find information for the development of the material. Since it is a mix of different ingredients finalizing the mixture was complicated. It was enjoyable to see different results and analyse them.
Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?
I did a lot of the experiments I wanted to and I definitely plan on continuing it further. Since it’s a new idea a lot of different experiments need to be carried out to get an optimal solution. I do have a preliminary prototype.
What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?
I learnt the importance of accepting negative results. It gets frustrating initially when theory doesn’t transform as it should practically, but this is a problem while making any prototype.
Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?
Believe in your idea, and keep altering it as the needs change.
