Jakob Mattsson - Nanosuit #1

 

Describe the idea:

Today wetsuits are generally made out of raw oil with the result of a heavy, thick and non-environmentally friendly “must have” for the watersport user. Introducing a new renewable material to the structure together with a completely unique design we believe we can create a thinner, more flexible suit with the same thermal properties.

 

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

My name is Jakob and I study the last year on engineering nanoscience at LTH. No matter work experience (academy/industry) I have come to the conclusion that I want to form my everyday life by working on my own ideas to find stimulation and flexibility. Together with Eric Holmström I have gotten the opportunity to combine my big interest in surfing with my educational knowledge.

 

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?
The goal is to completely determine the structure of the wetsuit and to construct a prototype suitable to perform different measurements on. Parallel we will develop a website to reach out to customers and to provide useful information.

 

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs? 

The scholarship has given both time and money to push our idea forward and I have big expectations of what we can achieve this summer. With a possible cooperation with KEA in Copenhagen we look forward to create a prototype early in the summer to get results and parallel to this handle communication with costumers.

Tell us what you have done on your projects so far during the Leapfrogs time:

We have focused on the development of both a prototype and a website. Lots of hours have been put on practical work such as product design, optimising the structure etc. The website is also getting more complete after photo shoots with photographers and design improvement. We are now doing measurements on our prototype with an instrument that we built ourselves simulating the water sport environment. Parallel we have started to reach out to events where it would be convenient to show our product.

 

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected? 

We started of completing all goals for the summer the first week which was a surprise. However, with new goals we also ran in to problems concerning our measurements for the prototype. Despite the possibility of running measurements on the university we realised those results didn’t tell us that much about the quality of our product. Hence, we had to build our own instrument which took a lot of hours but also ended up showing a more useful result.

 

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

We will continue develop the prototype which has been the original plan. However, it will now be more about optimising the structure. We will try to find out how to choose the materials to be as cheap and environmentally friendly as possible and figure out how the product could be mass produced. Parallel to this we will further discuss how to get own rights to make our product as powerful as possible.

How did you experience the three months?

It was the best possible way for our project to grow and I really enjoyed working with my own idea full time. We have been sitting on Venture Lab and just the atmosphere with other entrepreneurs has been inspiring and motivating. You decide yourself what to do every day which is both hard and amazing.

 

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

For me hard and enjoyable go under the same category. I really enjoy figuring out solutions to problems that initially seems to kill the project. One example is the difficulty to carry out valuable measurements on thermal conductivity on our samples. We have been changing instrument and method many times but when we finally find a solution for it (we think), it was a great feeling.

 

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

I must say that our project developed in a way that was very much in line with our goals. We will continue with the project this fall to do a master thesis on our idea.

 

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

Whatever research you do, it will save you time in the lab, your marketing etc. Some will tell me that trial and error is more time effective and of course I agree to some extent. However, as soon something doesn’t work out the way I planned, I will in the future try to understand why and how I will change my way of working.

 

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

Google your idea. See if similar things exist and if the consumer can find value in your product. Otherwise it is just waste of time.
