Describe the idea:
Better Bites aims to contribute to the vegan food scene in Sweden by showing its versality and deliciousness. It emerged from the goal to start a business with a positive impact which is why sustainability is our core value. Our approach is to build a unique vegan catering service located in Malmö. However, we are also thinking about building an online reputation by means of cooking videos, ebooks and nutritional advice.
Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.
My name is Judith Schmidt and I’m 23 years old. I just finished my Master’s in Leadership for Sustainability at Malmö University. Before I moved to Sweden one year ago, I did my Bachelor’s in psychology in the Netherlands. I’m a highly determined personality with strong values which is why I love entrepreneurship.
What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?
Basically, I will work on making the business work on a large scale. Therefore, I will spend my time finding partners for a kitchen space as well as for our supply chain. I also just found a business partner and together, we will try to optimize Better Bites’ catering process. Thus, the following three months will be a mix of administrative work, securing partnerships and using our creativity to create an awesome menu.
What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?
There is a lot I want to achieve: On top of the list is officially registering the business, creating a website and a logo, creating a menu, protecting Better Bites as a trademark, finding sustainable packaging and transportation solutions as well as finding a kitchen that suits our needs. My overall aim is to be able to officially launch our catering service and website this September after the Leapfrogs scholarship has ended.
Tell us what you have done on your projects so far during the Leapfrogs time:
Our main focus during the last weeks was testing. To create the best service, we conducted two surveys with the goal to deepen our understanding of our target group. This research has been especially fruitful for the development of our menu because we got insight about the question which of our creations are most liked by our consumers. We also secured a few catering jobs for the fall, gave our first cooking workshop and talked to multiple restaurants regarding a kitchen space to prepare our food in.
Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?
We stuck to many points in our planning (e.g. securing partnerships or creating a menu). However, we had to realize that starting a business takes a lot of time, dedication and effort. We have done some great progress during the last weeks but still have reached only a few of our goals for this summer as unforeseen challenges are part of an entrepreneur’s daily life. For example, finding a suitable kitchen space has been harder than expected, especially because a food business must deal with a lot of regulations.
What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?
We will mainly stick to the original plan which is taking all the necessary steps to be able to officially launch Better Bites this September. To achieve this goal, our next steps are creating a website and an awesome menu. Nevertheless, we also did some changes to our plan based on a better understanding of our business idea and vision. One example is that we will shift more attention to our marketing because we realized it is a necessity if we want to start selling our services in September.
How did you experience the three months?
Working on my project these three months during the summer has been a great experience. I was able to take my business idea to the next level and are happy to announce that we are now a fully operating business. Without the Leapfrogs support, we wouldn’t have been able to make our business idea a reality in such a short time.
What has been hardest/most enjoyable?
Starting your own business is like riding a roller coaster – you have ups and downs. Obviously, I enjoyed the ups more because they are the moments in which you see your business idea progressing and you have the feeling that your hard work pays off. Staying dedicated during the downs has been hardest for me because as an entrepreneur it can sometimes be quite challenging to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?
During the last three months, we found ourselves in many unforeseen situations and not everything went according to plan. However, we achieved our goal of starting to operate after the Leapfrogs period has ended. Therefore, I would call our project a success and we will continue working with it in the future. In fact, we are just getting started.
What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?
I think the most important lesson I learnt is to find the right balance between listening to other people’s opinions and feedback and pursuing your own thoughts and ideas. I have experienced that if you care too much about what other people have to say about your idea, you will get stuck and loose direction. However, if you ignore feedback, you are doomed to fail. Therefore, be selective and only take relevant feedback into account.
Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?
Being an entrepreneur is a challenging task and it is very unlikely that a ‘new’ entrepreneur takes every step needed to set-up a certain business into consideration. Therefore, it is important to keep in mind that every planned action will take much longer than calculated and expected. Besides, putting a great theoretical idea into practice often doesn’t work out which is why it is important to be flexible regarding the realization of an idea.
