Describe the idea!

The food industry contributes with 25% of households' total climate impact in Sweden, Klimato started with the aim to reduce this number. Our vision is to make climate friendly food choices easy for everyone.

Klimato offers a web-based application, which allows restaurants to calculate, communicate and compensate climate impact of food. To communicate the climate impact of each meal to the consumer a quantitative CO2e label are presented via menu to nudge people towards climate-smart choices.

 

Who are you? 

I always been curious about the world and had an entrepreneurial spirit. During my studies in Bachelor of Science in Business and Economics at Lund University, I was enrolled with various startup projects, like the charity mobile app Big Heart. Two years ago my partners and me started Klimato. Simultaneously I continued my academic path by taking courses in information systems. Additional knowledge that I felt was needed in the modern day business world.

 

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?
We will organize and prepare to scale up the sales processes by requiring a CRM system and make a “sales playbook”. Klimato has now employed salespersons in Norway and Denmark and will during this period plan and execute the Scandinavian expansion strategy.
On the tech-side we will work with a numerous improvement within the app, feedback we gathered from current customers. Finally, we will continue our dialogue with various investors and business angels.

 

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?
Our goal is to have automatized all functions within the app, which would minimize the manual work with current customers. Ultimately, freeing time and resources to speed up the sales and growth.
All the data within the app is extracted from RISE database. Their data is only applicable to the Nordics, therefore one objective is to get in touch with data providers with research regarding foods climate impact outside Scandinavia.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time. 
We have during this period prepared to speed up the sales process in order to scale up. By acquiring a lead-generator system as well as a CRM system the team have systematically focused on researching and prospecting customers in specific our target groups.
Furthermore “playbooks” has been created for the purpose of having a structural sales process within the Scandinavian sales team and in order to provide information regarding how to maintain our current customers.
Klimato has also begun to frequently post crisp content on our social channels, check it out!

 

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected? 

Klimato is doing progress everyday and everything is going according to our plan. As expected most businesses in Scandinavia are slowly getting back from summer holiday and the sales team are ready for the coming months.
The development team just presented a fresh new application update! The new update will allow the current customers to use the Klimato services independently. As the developers at Klimato will go back to school and work less from now on, we are searching for a new full time developer.
      

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way? 

We are still researching potential partnerships with scientist whom are working with climate-data regarding foods environmental impact, outside the Scandinavian Peninsula. The focus to acquire a set of new databases has increased as we got some unexpected request as well as interest from abroad.

On the finance side, we will continue to apply for soft funding applications. Furthermore we are progressing regarding our first investment and are preparing for a final pitch in front of a group of investors.

How did you experience the three months?

The leapfrog period has been wonderful, it’s been so interesting to be able to focus on our business in the summertime. The grant allowed us time to take a step back to organize as well as analyse our strategy and the current path we are pursuing.

 

What has been most difficult and what has been most enjoyable?

Klimato got accepted to the EIT-food tech programme that took place in Haifa, Israel. So, the best part was obviously to go the Mideastern country for a month. It was inspiring to meet start-ups from every part of the world and learn from each other journeys. It was extremely enjoyable to explore the startup ecosystem in another part of the world.    

 

Will you continue working on your project in the future? If so, what is your next step?

Most definitely! The next step is to reach the broader mass and to establish us as a brand in which companies reach out to in order to implement a more sustainable way of doing business. It is no secret that start-ups are depended on growth to survive, for us this means finding the right customer channels as well as partners. In this next phase, our aim is to find the right investor, which can provide liquidity but also has a relevant network.

 

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

I think it is vital to be honest with your cofounders. If you need help or can’t finish a task in time, you must be able to talk about it in an open way. Furthermore, I learnt that structure is so important, to use all the tools for a structed way of doing business and communication. I think to have more structure in doing business is something myself and other startups can learn from bigger companies.

 

Do you have any tips to other new entrepreneurs?

There is so much help to get. You can talk with various business mentors and there are lots and lots of different grants to apply to. Where you can get small funding’s grants for free, marketing and by filling in these application forms you also have to communicate your business idea and value props which is a perfect exercise. Sweden has a great eco system for start-ups so take advantage of it!
Second tip is to not forget about your potential customers. Don’t spend valuable time on working on your idea with knowing who would like to use or buy it. So meanwhile you are making your idea into a product or service, go out and talk to potential customers. Ask them questions and try to figure out their problems with existing solutions.
