Describe your idea!

We are developing a service in the form of an app, that allows students and upcoming students review, discuss and compare all of the different courses and programmes that the Swedish universities have to offer. The purpose of the service is to help students find the education that is right for them without having to waste time and resources on  trial and error.

Who are you?

I am  currently between my second and third year of studies in the Interaction Design programme at Malmö University. In addition to this I do freelance work as a web designer. Joining me this summer is Isac Jeppsson. He is a close friend of mine, as well as a student at LTH within the Computer Science field.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

During these three months we will continue the development and design of the app. We will also reach out to relevant stakeholders for potential collaborations and financial support.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

By the end of the Leapfrogs programme I expect us to have a fully working beta version of the app with all of the important features in place, ready for user-testing. I also expect us to have established connections with the nearby universities.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

During the Leapfrogs programme we have up on til this point focused a lot on reaching out to collaborative partners such as different universities to integrate their courses and programmes into our service. In addition to this, development of the app has continued. Both in the design and coding department we have made serious breakthroughs. We have also established that there is an interest for a service like this through surveys.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

With this being one of the first mobile apps that we develop, a lot of technical obstacles have presented themselves in our process. Learning any new programming language or framework always comes with its own unique set of challenges. Thankfully, other members of the VentureLab programme with LU Innovation have helped us resolve many of our issues.
Getting in touch with potential collaborators has proved to require more patience than we first expected. Getting replies from stakeholders has been as much of a challenge as development.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

We have just in the past week started develop a website that we will use to advertise the service. In addition to this we hope it will further legitimise our efforts and lend itself to getting responses a little bit easier. We will also continue with development to try to reach our goal of being able to get the first round of user testing done in the beginning of September.

How did you experience the three months?

My experience of the time during these months has been a great one. Each day I have felt a sense of freedom to do what I really want to do. In addition to this I have met a lot of nice people through the programme. With the workshops and access to Venture Lab it has been really easy to get help from other students.

What has been most difficult and what has been most enjoyable?
The most difficult thing has been to keep myself from getting distracted. In a project like this there are a lot of different things that have to be taken care of. But since I tend to prioritise the things that I find the most fun, like design and development, some things have been postponed for much longer than they should have, like communicating with stakeholders. The most enjoyable part has been working with my partner.

Will you continue working on your project in the future? If so, what is your next step?
We will continue with the project but at a slower pace. We have already started user testing and subsequent tweaking of the app, implementing bug fixes and improvements here and there. This is what we will continue doing for the time being.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?
That we don’t have to do everything by ourselves and that we are not alone. If you are struggling with something, instead of spending hours and hours trying to work out what is wrong, we experienced that is much faster to just ask someone for help. In this programme at least, people were happy to help and in return we could help them with something they were having issues with.

Do you have any tips to other new entrepreneurs?
At the start of each working week, take moment to reflect on the work you did the previous week, as well as setting clear goals for the coming week. By doing this your progress becomes more tangible and the whole project doesn’t feel as huge and daunting. You will also get a much better idea of the speed of which you can accomplish things in your project. Making planning a lot more accurate.
