Describe the idea!

EveryDrop is a cleantech chat-platform for household greywater management solutions. We provide a hands-on approach to water saving by means of greywater reuse in households. EveryDrop matches the household’s greywater characteristics and local conditions to an appropriate greywater reuse solution.

Who are you?

Recent graduate of Water Resources Engineering at Lund University with a background in Civil Engineering. I have been working on startup idea related to greywater for a little over a year. My home country is South Africa where I previously worked in the Department of Water and Sanitation before coming to Lund for studies.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

During the three months I will be learning from my potential customers and iterating the approach based on the feedback and response. I will spend time actively looking for team members and establishing a strategic plan for EveryDrop in the long term.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

  1. Have a solid business model
  2. Validate at least one of the customer acquisition approaches
  3. Have a customer base of at least 6 people

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

I have managed to design and build an automated chatbot that is accessible on Facebook. With The chatbot up and running, I was able to attract users who had little knowledge about greywater or wanted guidance on the safe reuse of greywater in their households.

The data from the chatbot has given direction to the next phase of EveryDrop.

I have been able to recruit two ladies to join my team and help with EveryDrop from August.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

The work that I had control over has gone according to plan (creating the chatbot with minimal costs). However, it occurred to me that this chabot would be mostly beneficial for people in water scarce areas like Sub-saharan Africa, but Facebook isn’t the popular social media platform there. Instead WhatsApp is what people use mostly, but it doesn’t have the ability to have an automated chatbot like what Facebook offers.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

Considering the feedback from the chatbot, what people would prefer to reuse their greywater on, EveryDrop will be developing a system that allows households to reuse their greywater on plants.

With having new team members, we will be exploring how to provide safe gardening with greywater for edible foods.

This system does not exclude the use of the chatbot, we hope to use the chatbot as part of the customer acquisition phase and continue to encourage efficient use of water in households.

How did you experience the three months?

The three months were very productive. Focusing only on developing the idea has allowed me to create a model for testing and recruit team member. During the three months I was able to establish a plan and create goals to achieve the vision. I think it is valuable to dedicate uninterrupted time to an early stage idea.

What has been most difficult and what has been most enjoyable?

The most difficult was not being able to talk to people because they are on summer holiday. It was also challenging making a pivot of the idea. I enjoyed making the model and seeing the results for myself. Realising that my idea is possible.

Will you continue working on your project in the future? If so, what is your next step?

Yes, I will continue working on my idea. The next step is to be part of organisation partners that will help with the prototyping, market entry and business model. These are the most pressing concerns for the idea.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

The most important lesson for me is realising that this whole process is a journey which requires constant engagement and feedback. All parts of the project require the build, measure, learn and repeat method.

Do you have any tips to other new entrepreneurs?

You are the only person who understands your idea like you do, don’t be impatient if it takes time for other people to catch on.
