Therése Wintélius - Pedental #1

Describe the idea:

Dental fear and dental anxiety is fequent in both children and adults. The foundation of that fear is often built during childhood. My idea is aiming towards making the dental visit fun, engaging and to give back control and a sense of participation to the child through child friendly dental instruments. Preventing fear in children is preventing fear in adults.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I recently graduated from Kristianstad University and now work part time as a dental hygienist. I tend to get big ideas and act on them fast. I also like to challenge myself, with a sense of both fear and excitement – hence why I later this year will go on a very long hike far up in northern Sweden despite not ever having been on a hike before.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

I aim to polish the design of my product and get a legal protection of design. I also aim to develop a prototype and try it out in a dental setting. Furthermore I will delve more into what is required to develop a medical product, as well as identify and establish contact with potential customers.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

I expect to be further on with the project than I am now. The aim is to achieve the previous stated goals during these months. However I am new to entrepreneurship and aware of the fact that the journey might not be as straightforward as expected. Finally I expect to grow as a person and as a future business leader.

Tell us what you have done on your projects so far during the Leapfrogs time:

I have finalized the design. I have also made a market research survey which targeted dental hygienists. I used The Mom Test to extract as exact and in depth answers as possible in relation to my product. Furthermore I have been investigating rules and regulations regarding my product, CE marking etc. I have also bought a domain and I am starting to develop my website.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

So far yes. There are still some questions as to which category my product falls under, and therefore which rules apply regarding clinical tests, certification etc. Is has also been harder than expected to find a firm which can produce the prototype in the desired, and final, material. I have come to realise that the prototype will be in another, easier accessible, material for clinical trial. The aim is to test the patient’s reaction and cooperation to the design. The exact material is secondary in this time of the process.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

I will focus on getting the prototype made and try it out in a clinical setting. For me, that is the most exciting and crucial step – having a physical product in my hand and testing if it really does work! The original plan is working so far and I am enjoying the process.

How did you experience the three months?

It was a great boost to have validation for my idea. I got a surge of energy and it was great fun working and developing the project!

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

Hardest have definitely been realising that things won’t go as fast as I wish. Things take time. Also, the whole legal aspect, rules, restrictions and such has been hard to figure out. Things must be done in a certain way, and finding that way has been difficult at times. Enjoyable has been working on the project and meeting the others at Leapfrogs. I drew a lot of inspiration from the other people awarded with the scholarship.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

It did, however slower. I will continue working with the project. A prototype is being made as I write!

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

Things take time. Do your research. And have fun! It will be ups and downs, but going forward ever so slightly is still progress. Being flexible has also been my biggest learning from this. As in don’t loose sight of the end goal, but also trust the process and go along with it.

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

Go for it! I´m still very green myself but I have learned so, so much since I had my idea, both through my own curiosity but also through these 3 months. New knowledge and personal development is never a waste, no matter if the idea takes off or fail.
