My name is Daniel and I just became a licensed psychologist. In my masterthesis I did research on different ways of changing a persons ability to concentrate by stimulating the brain with a weak current in a non-invasive way. I will extend this technique to include other areas of the brain, thus leading to other benefits, for example increased working memory capacity. 

I have a 5 year psychologist degree and a university degree in computer science. I have had my own company, first Romulus and then Psychsoft AB, since 2008 and have there focused on software development. The primary product selling today are WAIS-IV Narrativ which is a program designed to produce written naratives based on testresults from IQ-tests. I have also worked as an architect, developing family homes all over Sweden. 

I will focus on designing the headset and specify the technical requirements needed to change the mental capacity of the people using it. Most of the time will be spent designing the headset but a portion of the time will also be spent looking for manufacturers. 

I expect to be able to show 1) a design of the headset, 2) A list of different possible manufacturers, 3) A rough design of the software needed to help in treating various mental illnesses.

I have during June researched different diy-projects which are focused on “reading” and manipulating the brainwaves. My main focus has been to get a understanding of the electronics needed to develop a device with these techniques and the problems that could be associated with combining the techniques.  I have also been busy looking at new research articles describing different stimulation protocols that has the goal of affecting different psychiatric diseases. 

I am still in the research phase and that has indeed gone according to plan. The thing I have found most difficult is to solve the problem of fitting and getting the connectors to attach to the skull. That is a known problem but something that has to be solved in a none-messy kind of way. And by none-messy I mean that it should not be necessary to apply gel to the skull in order to get contact.

My main focus for the rest of the Leapfrog-hours will be to find a partner who can help me design and develop a prototype of the device. I will also roughly design the first application that the device is going to be run by. The application will include a stimulation protocol for two psychiatric diseases. My original plan is still game but I will probably have to increase my tempo during the last. I have during the research phase realised that the coming working phase will be more demanding than previously calculated.

The three months gave me a opportunity to find and contact the people who can make this project into something very good.  It also gave me a chance to build the framework for the software part of the product.

The process with a new project is always hard, I have been here before. This time it was especially hard to find good people who can work with the hardware parts as I have little experience in product design. Most enjoyable has been to closing in on the actual design of the product, to see that it is possible. It has also been very fun thinking about the different applications for the product. 

I knew from the beginning that I would not have product in my hands when these three months were over and done with, the product is too complex. I think I had a fairly good estimate of what I could achieve during these months and I will this autumn take the next step in getting the product to market, actually developing a first prototype to test out in the lab. 

The most important lessons are in the area of hardware design. I have been forced to go into detail on the different designs of electrode for the skull and this, I think, will be the make or break of the product. If these things aren’t perfect people will not use it.

Tips for new entrepreneurs:

Stop reading “How-to-be-an-entrepreneur-books” and instead read books as Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb on the importans of building systems (in this case business models, products and your own personal lifestyle as entrepeneur) who is stable in a world where anything can happen. Your money can run out, you can get sick, your business model may stink at first, costumers loath your webdesign or whatever. Everything must be able to change in order for you to succed. Being able to persevere is, in my opinion, more important than anything else in the world of entrepenuership.
