Hampus Sunden - Musikbanken

Hampus Sunden - Musikbanken  #1

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

I am an educated music producer and landscape architect. Music has been my life since I was 15 years old and during the last couple of years I have been taking part of the Swedish music scene and learnt much about music Business. I have seen many musicians struggling with tight economy but I have a strong believe that producers and songwriters can make money more easily than are today. My answer is Bonbon tunes, an alternative music publishing company.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

Previously I have had all kind of jobs. I have been working at petrol station in Copenhagen, at Starbucks in London, at supermarket in Sweden. I have also teached in tennis and been working as a substitute teacher at elementary school. I have produced a lot of songs for myself and to other artists and released two albums with my band ”Sista Bossen”.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

Bonbon tunes will tear down barriers for songwriters and producers and will allow any originator to publish their work. My goal is to establish a databas featuring artists and songs connected to Bonbon tunes. I will spend time marketing, reaching both artists and customers and connect to partners, record labels etc. I will look into questions regarding legal issues and standardize a Bonbon tunes contract and set up a graphic profile for Bonbon tunes.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

I expect to gain experience in how to start upp a business which I strongly believe in. These three month will give me a chance to further understand how music business operate and give me chance to establish contacts that is necessary to further expand the business idea.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

I have been working hard to get song/placements in commercials and establishing contact with both filmmakers and commercial firms. Right now I am in contact with Orcla food, pitching an commercial idea which could be built around one of our songs. Im trying to get musicians to join Musikbanken so that we can expand our library of music. Also working with the front end, website, graphic layout etc.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

Summer holidays!!! It has been very hard to get in touch with people because almost everyone is out of office. For this reason the work has been slowed down. Also, everything is moving slower than expected, I might have been a bit optimistic about my goals for the summer. For this reason my project is not going entirely according the plan. I have realized that dealing with judicial issues will take much longer time than I estimated.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

I will keep selling songs to potential customers and recruiting songwriters to join us. Its very important to display a good CV when we launch our platform so hopefully we can cut one or more placements over the summer. My goal is to have a beta version of a website by the end of the summer. Im good with layouts but Im looking for partnership to create a database.

How did you experience the three months?

It has been enjoyable! Of course, it has been very hard running a startup. I have gained a lot of experience from my own project and this will be very helpful in future projects. Also it has been very inspiring listening to the lectures and talking to and meeting other leapfroggers.

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

The hardest part has definitely been to structure and prioritizing my time. It was hard to keep focus on one thing when there where thousands of things that where needed to be done. Also, running a project alone has also been hard I believe I would benefit from having a partner talking to and sharing ideas with. I am very happy that the grant allowed me to work 100 % on the project which has been a huge learning process.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

I expected to achieve more during these three month but in retrospect I have learned that three month is a narrow amount of time to set up a start up from scratch. I would have needed more time to achieve my goal and I have to take brake from the project during the fall because of my studies. For this reason Musikbanken is at a hold.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

Never give up and talk to people when you need help, an input from the outside is always helpful. Don't be afraid to re evaluate your work but never stop believe in it!
