Describe the idea!

Traditional simulation training in Emergency Care requires a lot of resources, props, personnel and preparations. With HeroSight’s software based on Augmented Reality, customers can arrange emergency care training at any place and time with minimum preparation needed. HeroSight’s software allows companies to access affordable drill training and customise the product to fit their educational needs, to a significantly lower cost than traditional emergency care simulations.


Who are you? 

My name is Daniel Kindstrand and I hold a MSc in Entrepreneurship: New Venture Creation combined with field experience as a freelance journalist in hostile areas. I have participated in several trauma treatment courses and gained knowledge in drills and scenario training through previous work in the port of Gothenburg and on commercial fleets. As the CEO of HeroSigh in an early stage, I perform all non-code related tasks such as administration, management, finance, presentations, sales, networking and recruitment.


What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time? 
During the months supported by the Leap Frog scholarship I intend to establish university collaborations and deepened research of targeted market, competitors, medical aspects. The aim is to fully exploit given opportunity by focusing on tasks that tend to be overlooked during the high-tech start-up journey burdened by fast decision-making. With more knowledge at hand correct full navigation in waters of uncertainty will be possible meanwhile risks will be mitigated. 


What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

The aim is to make HeroSight as prepared as possible for the busy fall with market launch in November. This makes collaboration with technical universities and gaming programs essential. Additionally, product development, deepened research will be a goal to obtain more knowledge as well as making HeroSight investment ready for further soft money funding and equity investments.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time. 

June was as expected an intense month of finalizing various important commitments, while July hosted more research, structure of documents and general preparation for the fall. Winning the investor pitch arranged by European Startup Festival was an important validation before moving onto the less pitch-busy summer. I was also invited to showcase our AR prototype at MSB Sandö that came out successful by capturing valuable feedback. Later, I got interviewed by Minc Incubator in Malmö that lead to the offer of a spot in their one year program. 


Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected? 

June was a very busy month where people in my new network wanted to finalize things before their annual vacation. This lead to a lot of scheduled meetings were, some was needed to be postponed due to a mutual lack of time. In July it was hard to get tasks done that required answers from professionals. Therefore, this period focused mostly on research, planning, updates and tasks that had been overlooked during the spring. Getting back into a research-mood gave valuable insights such as new fields for our product.


What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

The industry vacation period is almost over and HeroSight has moved on to a busy product development. Soon we will move into our new office that will enhance our productivity. With an office at hand it is easier to collaborate with recruited interns. My focus will mainly be to prepare for HeroSight’s participation in the Venture Cup National Final in September which includes a deepened focus on sales to make HeroSight qualify for the title “Best traction” on top of the previously given “Game Changer”.

How did you experience the three months?

The work with HeroSight during this period felt a bit like a rollercoaster, with both ups and downs. The month of June was uphill and busy with pitching, applications and meetings. July was rather flat, which gave time to reflect and plan. August started a bit like July but at the end it felt more like a very busy month with Vinnova applications, meetings and deadlines.


What has been most difficult and what has been most enjoyable?

Receiving another grant from LU Innovation and getting accepted to the Minc incubator program was an important milestone, giving us an energy boost. As an entrepreneur with a clear aim for a high growth startup, I am facing multiple challenges at the same time. Often company challenges spillover on the private life. This makes it a journey that includes episodes of unhealthy stress levels and cognitive overload, which can blur effective decision making.


Will you continue working on your project in the future? If so, what is your next step?

YES. Since mid-August the main aim has been taking collaborations with customers to the next level. Currently, we have several pilot agreements in place, which secures product testing and evaluation by prehospital professionals for the launching of the first product in November. Similar negotiations are being carried out with a large international company and a national institution. We aim to have these in place before participating in the Venture Cup national final in September.


What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

Threat is what kills first. That is a commonly used phrase in emergency care. I think this also applies for startups, meaning that only the most threatening problems are relevant to solve.

I have also realized that I personally feel the worst when there is a lot of decisions hanging in the air. As this is overwhelming, it is usually better to take quick bold decisions based on what you know to clear mind and the path forward.


Do you have any tips to other new entrepreneurs?

  • Skill diversity can boost trust within the team, efficiency, soft money funding and investments etc. 
  • Don’t be scared of making bold decisions. Getting from point A to point G might not be completely correct but at point G you know much more and it is pretty close to H.
  • If you are looking for something, like co-founders, ask everyone including bad matches, since these are likely to know at least another good candidate.
