Oskar Handmark - Närkampen

Oskar Handmark - Närkampen

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

We started Närkampen about a year ago. It’s a multiplayer game-based app with ideas from the board game “När då då?”, where the objective is to collect as many cards as possible by guessing when a certain historical event took place. Your answers are always in relation to your previously acquired cards, which makes it harder the longer the game goes on.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I am starting my fifth year this autumn in Computer Science at LTH. I spent this semester at University of Toronto and before that I had an office in the Venture Labs incubator, working on Närkampen. My skills are in development, specifically algorithms/data mining, apps, websites and web services and run my own consultancy company since two years back. Last summer I built an android app to control wireless lighting for Inside Light at Medicon Village.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

We have not touched this project for a while, so we got some catching up to. First, we are rethinking our business model and think about how we should grow from where we are now. I will restructure our backend and implement social media login, a category system, statistics, and hopefully a functional prototype iOS app.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

I expect a lot of results in regards to the product itself, as this is a great opportunity to actually get time to work on something. It is hard to actually get something done when you are also studying full time. Leapfrogs is also great for networking and building potential future business relations. I hope to get to know as many of the Leapfroggers as possible!

Oskar Handmark - Närkampen #2

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

It’s been six interesting Närkampen weeks so far. I started by really thinking the concept through and decided how the application would work, especially in terms of user experience. I designed three different application flows and asked around 20 persons which one of my three prototypes they preferred. I let it sink in for a few weeks while finishing the backend implementation and has now moved on to implementing the user interfaces. Since a lot already exists for the Android platform, I started on iOS with the slightly changed interface.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

I’ve not been as much to the WTC office space as I originally planned. WTC is such a great place, but for me, the travel distance really took its toll and I’ve now found an office literally three minutes away from my home. I think the easy part has been the programming, and the hard part the business development cycle, which is the opposite of what I originally thought. Working alone is always hard, mainly because it is hard to prioritize the correct things.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

Lots of things have changed, mainly the way I work with this project, it’s now a lot more structure and planning to everything I do, but I believe I will stick to the original plan. Since the backend is now finished, what remains is the iOS application and some restructuring and redesigning on the Android application. Before the summer is over I’m hoping to have an almost fully functional iOS app.
