Gustav Karlström – Innovational Movement AB

Gustav Karlström - Innovational Movement AB #1

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

I study my fourth year of mechanical engineering with a master in logistics and industrial management. My project is a new type of hospital transportation system that will allow for movement of immobile patients in hospital environments. The bed will help both nurses with moving patients and make it more comfortable for patients. We got the idea through looking at the problems with moving patients.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I have lived in Texas when I was younger and studied a semester abroad at North Carolina State University last fall. I am on my fourth year of my Mechanical engineering degree with a master in logistics and industrial management. I have working experiences from many different restaurants in Stockholm and have worked at a Warehouse in both Oslo and Södertälje.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

I will mostly on a market analysis which includes identifying potential customers and specifiying needs for the industry and customers. A lot of work will be visiting hospitals, interviewing employees at hospitals and gather information about all the processes that are included in hospital beds (washing, disinfecting, moving etc.) Part of the time will be spent together with Join technology who are actively working with producing a prototype of the bed for us.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

After these three months I hope to achieve a solid understanding of what the industry looks like, what customers want when they purchase hospital beds and identify competitors in the market. We also have a presentation in the middle of July that we hope to present for a potential customer. After the summer, we also want to be able to have started creating a prototype which demands a lot of work from out part with Join Technology.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

We have visited hospitals and observed how nurses work. During one day we observe nurses move and treat patients at Karolinska Institutet. We have also interviewed several experts in the field. Many are different nurses but also experts within ergonomics. We also constructed a simple prototype of our bed using wood and nails. The prototype has given a very good insight to our construction and what we need to work on.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

Everything has of course not according to our plan but we have still done many things. One thing we wanted to do over the summer was to interview nurses, experts and talk to potentials customers. We have had several interviews which have been truly purposeful. We have also had contact with potentials customers. However, one fact that has been difficult to plan for is the vacation break everyone has. Most people are gone in July. Therefore, we did a lot of things and have many meetings planned in August. July is more of a doer month.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

During the remaining time we will focus on three things. First, is to meet with our patent attorney and discuss our PCT that needs to be sent in in middle of august. We need to discuss what needs to be in the patent and what not. Secondly, we are creating a prototype out of wood. We will continuously improve the prototype so we learn more of the difficulties ahead. Finally, we are working on pitching our idea to potential customer that will take place in August.
