Love Ossler - Läxhjälp med pensionärer

Describe yourself and your project. How did you get the idea?

Our team consists of Love Ossler and Olof Martinsson. We are two mechanical engineering students who just finished our third year at our program. We want to try to employ retired people to give homework assistance to elementary and high school students. Our company is mainly focused on helping students with math and physics.  We got the idea from brainstorming about how to cost efficiently provide this type of service.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

Love Ossler

As stated above, I am a mechanical engineering student on my third year. I have always been interested in entrepreneurship. However this is my first time really trying to implement an idea in practise. We have been running our company Ikant for about 6 month now and this is an exciting opportunity to make it grow. Before this point in my life I have been travelling quite a lot. I have also had a lot of different normal jobs like café co-worker and so on.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

We will work out a way to find qualified employees and also do promotion campaigns to reach out to new customers. We are going to find a good web designer to give our website a facial lift. We are going to try to establish a more solid company organisation and develop our company with promotions and organization.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

Find new employees and customers. Learn what potential there is in having retired people work with homework assistance.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

At this point, we have been able to start up a few marketing projects with help from the Leapfrogs-money. This includes designing and printing flyers and posters with information about our working opportunities as well as the services we offer. Furthermore, we have engaged a person from the outside with updating and re-designing our webpage. Right now, we are working with placing out the printed material on appropriate locations such as libraries and other public places.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

Many of our small projects have taken more time than we expected. It is easy to be an optimist when it comes to estimating the required time for most tasks. The biggest challenge is probably the wide range of work tasks included in running a business – book-keeping, marketing and everything in between. It is a challenge to learn and be able to control all of these tasks.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

Our main plan has proceeded fairly well, only taking a bit more time than expected. Thus we will continue to follow that one. The next step is to get our marketing material out in public so that people can see us, both customers and presumptive workers. When we get an overview over the interest in our project, we will start making a more precise plan for our organization. This will be needed because of the increased number of people involved in our business.

How did you experience the three months?

We have been continuing working on our company in a steady pace over the summer. We have mostly been working with some structural and administrative aspects of the company. The Leapfrogs-money have allowed us to make our website better and to prepare a promotion with flyers and posters that we will launch the last week of august when the schools has started again for the semester.

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

The hardest part has been trying to develop a concept for our website. It takes a lot of time and creativity to develop a concept that look good with colours and design. We tried to do the design ourselves at first, but ended up hiring an industrial designer which currently is helping us out. The most enjoyable part was to be able to work with and develop our company.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

More or less, even though things have progressed a bit slower than what we expected in the beginning. We still didn’t manage to get in contact with or employ any elderly people to work with us. However, we will continue developing our company in general in the fall. We got a promotion with flyers and posters ready for when the school starts to attract new customers, and also a promotion for employing the elderly people that we still didn’t manage to go out with.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

Everything takes a lot more time than expected. We also learnt the value of communication with the customers, which was demonstrated well on the first workshop. Talking with customers is free and help to develop your business idea. Talking with customers by the help of polls and on the website is some of the strategies we will implement in our business in the future.

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

Find out how other entrepreneurs made their businesses successful. It helps you to not do some of the mistakes they did and are also very interesting stories. Starting up a new business is a big project. We think that creating a structured but dynamic development plan helps you to be more focused while you are working with your project.
