Joep Postma - MyWorld

Blogpost #1

Describe the idea!

MyWorld helps people integrate more effectively into their surroundings. We do this through a marketplace for maps where content creators with expert knowledge curate maps upon which they can monetize and/or grow their image. Users can subscribe to maps of interest, layering them on top of their base map. Thus, the user acquires a tool which provides hyperlocal content around their niche interests. We will initially focus on International Students arriving in a new destination.

Who are you?

I lived in several places across the globe for both studies, travels and work. These experiences made me aware of the challenges when it comes to finding like-minded people and places to pursue your hobbies and interests. This enables me to develop MyWorld’s platform with the end user's perspective in mind.

During my Bachelor’s in Business Administration, I co-founded an e-commerce webshop and I recently graduated from the Master’s in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at LU.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

In the past months, partly part of our master’s program, my companion Jack and I have done continuous customer research, made several prototype iterations varying from paper prototyping to wireframes, and we created a Business Plan. Since the universities are now starting to close for the summer, our focus will shift to creating an MVP that suits the needs of International Students arriving in Lund later in August.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

This summer, we want to achieve the following goals:

• Create an MVP for Lund University and have it ready when new students arrive at the end of August.

• Form a loyal group/community of local heroes that contribute to the map.

• Recruit design and programming talent as part of our core team instead of being outsourced.

Tell us what you have done on your project so far during the Leapfrogs time.

We have been building the Wordpress MVP and have come to conclude that technical skills lack from our side to make it attractive and user-friendly enough for our prospective users of International students that are used to high standards. We therefore need external skills to make it proficient enough, ideally in the form of additional technical team members and otherwise on freelance basis for which we have established a potential relation.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

As mentioned, creating a suitable MVP deemed harder than assumed. This lack in technical skills in the founding team whilst this is crucial for success, combined with a decreasing motivation for the project due to it not being strongly related to my personal passions, has made me decide to put this project on hold for now and instead focus on finding business potential linked to veganism. I already spent much of my free time and energy on veganism through my personal circles and as a board member for the Dutch Vegan Society, which shows the determination I would be willing to put into such a project.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

In line with the mom-test concept, I will explore what motivates other vegans and what challenges them. Besides testing the need for a completely plant-based health food chain concept, I am open to recognise recurring patterns that could spark business potential. I will do this by reaching out to the vegan community asking if I can join them for a meal and talk about their stories. I aim to visit a diverse group of people differentiating in gender, ethnicity and social layers to get a complete picture and additionally this content can also be used to show the bigger audience that the concept of veganism is multicultural and uniting.
