Julia Thunberg - Arkitektkonsulter som förändrar staden #1

Describe the idea:

Today, major construction projects involve citizens in the city. Cities are planned and built with a predetermined purpose where people should adapt to the built environment. We believe that temporality is a possible solution to create future cities – cities for people. We believe that a temporary building can work as a new urban playground for co-creation. As architect consultants, we are choosing assignments that includes people and the places they share.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

We are a creative team who have started the company 1:1 together. We have a bachelor degree in Built Environment at the University of Malmö. We have been working with the relationships between people’s quality of life and their built environment. Except traveling and observing cities, Julia is a yoga loving photographer. If you can't find Filippa, she probably is in her dad’s garage building furniture or behind the computer working with 3D modeling.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

During Leapfrogs, we are planning to build a clear identity, develop a business strategy and collaborative with other companies.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

We are on a mission to explore and design new ways of living. Our focus is creating cities for people and making the city a more inclusive place. During Leapfrogs, our assignments will vary in different dimensions. The goal is to experiment and co-create new ways of designing for a better future.

Tell us what you have done on your projects so far during the Leapfrogs time:

We have been participating in our first mission, a meeting at The Planning Office of Gothenburg. We had a conversation about the urban transformation in the city. Together, we talked about how we could involve citizens in the urban planning process, and how this could work in practice. The conversation ended with a possible collaboration with Göteborgs Stadstriennal 2018. We have created a draft how a conversation about the city can work in different forms of design. We have also developed our graphic identity with logo and color scheme.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

We have been working hard and efficiently. Now, during summer and the holiday period it’s been difficult to get in touch with people in the business. The urban planning process is complex and often extends over 10-15 years. There is a range of different types of actors that will participate in the process. Therefore, our process of planning has been easier than performing a complete result.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

We aim to achieve or mission through exhibitions, events and workshops. We will focus on creating a new meeting place for debate and research about architecture and urbanism in Sweden. The meeting place holds an innovation environment for sustainable development for everyone involved in developing our cities. A place that is open for everyone and filled with good opportunities.  After the summer, we will continue to work with our goals within the company.

How did you experience the three months?

The Leapfrogs months has been busy when implementing our ideas in real projects. It has also been rewarding to meet the other members of Leapfrogs and to discuss their ideas.

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

Since there are more architects working in the field, the hardest challenge for us has been to find what our company can do to stand out from the crowd. The most enjoyable part has been to visualize how our idea becomes real. Working as an entrepreneur, the most interesting part has been to participate in the creative process.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

We are working in large-scale,  time consuming projects. These three months have given us a deeper insight into the complexity of the urban transformation process. These months have given us experiences which we can use in our future work.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

To be a successful company and working as architect consultants, it’s important to physically attend the site that will change in the future. It’s necessary to understand the place identity before you make any kind of change.

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

Test the idea. Discuss with other people and dare to ask for honest opinions.
