Oliver Dahllöf - Malmö Studentpark #1

Describe the idea:

Today there are about 17.000 student homes missing in Sweden. It is one of the biggest reasons that student is Sweden choose to drop out in their first year or choose to not apply for higher education at all according to a SFS (Sveriges förenade studentkårer). I believe that we can use old shipping containers to upcycle new and modern student homes that are easy to transport and put together.

Who are you? Previous education/jobs/ experiences etc.

I recently graduated from Malmö University with a bachelor’s degree in computer science with one of the most important courses being in entrepreneurship and startups. Previous work experience varies between Apple, Lunicore Student Consulting and running my own freelance business to help others and run my own different projects. The last 5 years I also travelled to 23 countries over 4 continents and it developed me more than anything else I’ve done.

What will you do during these three months? How will you spend the time?

This three months I will focus on establishing relationships and looking at the possibility to actually build a new student park of containers in Malmö. With the relationships I also hope to develop a prototype that further will show how a container home could look, feel and work in Malmö.

What do you expect to achieve during Leapfrogs?

My hope is to develop relationships and bring in the money necessary to build a proper prototype for this project. I also hope to find land that could potentially be used for a future student park.

Tell us what you have done on your projects so far during the Leapfrogs time:

During this first part of the leapfrogs period, I have talked to both students and others, looking to validate the idea of student housing in containers. Many seem to really like the idea of living in a sustainable way by living in a green student community built with containers. I have also been in contact with student unions to see how they look at and discuss the issue of student housing in Malmö.

Has everything gone according to the plan? Has anything unexpected occurred? Has something been easier/harder than expected?

Yes and no. I have started to have conversations with a company that is already doing the kind of projects that I would want Malmö Studentpark to become. It has been harder than I thought to reach people I want to get in contact with because of summer and vacation time. I have still been able to have some correspondence with people that are interesting for the project and will further look into how we could work together.

What will you focus on during the remaining time? Will you follow your original plan or has anything changed along the way?

During my remaining time I will keep the conversation going with interested parts and see if we can build some kind of collaboration. I think that it is important that I build a strong case and plan with great validation before I try to collect money and build a prototype myself. There are already potential prototypes that I might be able to use if I could reach an agreement with the potential collaborators.

How did you experience the three months?

The three months flew by very quickly. It was a great time to learn about leading a project forward even though a lot of people are on vacation during this time. The workshops we had were very interesting and I learned a lot this summer.

What has been hardest/most enjoyable?

The hardest part about this time was being alone. It is really hard to run a big project or startup without having a great team that complements each other. The most enjoyable part was meeting other people that are on the path to becoming entrepreneurs. People that enjoy the challenge of building something new.

Did it go as expected? Will you continue working on your project in the future?

No, it didn’t go as expected. I didn’t build the container prototype as I planned. I was in the talks to borrow another container that had already been built to show the possibilities of container housing. I will not continue on this specific project, but I am still very interested in working with housing in some form.

What would you say is the most important lesson learnt while working on your project?

The most important lessons are: Make sure to find great people before you start, build a team before you try to do too much. Make sure that you are willing to commit the coming 3-5 years to this project and do it together with your team.

Do you have any tips to other ”new” entrepreneurs?

Learn from the lessons above, but other then that, JUST GO! It will be fun and you will learn a lot. People are kind and wish you all the best if you just genuinely ask them for their opinion or help.
